In 2016, Kato was a recipient of the 3Arts Award in Dance, a recipient of the Meier Achievement Award, and was named of the Top 5 Chicago Choreographers of 2016 by Newcity Stage. Kato has been producing high-quality interdisciplinary collaborative works with experimental musicians and visual artists since 1998 in the United States, Japan and Europe.

blue fish is a solo contemporary dance performance that reflects on humanity’s relationship with nature. Drawing upon a traditional Japanese view of nature and the philosophy of Tao, blue fish encourages the audience to perceive the intangible, the beauty of being as it is, which affirms and nurtures the ephemeral nature and dignity of life. For Ayako, dance is the fundamental force that allows her to think, sense, communicate, and move. Her ongoing practice is to rediscover humanity as a part of nature and to represent human movement as the embodiment of “The Way” of nature.  Evoking a sense of hope, blue fish explores the possibility for equilibrium, embracing both stillness and chaos as the paths for transformation when we recognize that we are nature itself.  This premiere coincides with the worldwide celebration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, 2017.
