Hedwig Dances Announces Request for Proposals from Choreographers for Fall 2023 Performance-Submissions due June 26, 2023

End Date
Jun 26, 2023

ABOUT HEDWIG DANCES:  Throughout its four-decade history, Chicago-based Hedwig Dances has built vibrant, novel, and at times startling visual and aural environments that cast the dancers in an altered, yet specific, time and place. The intersection of movement and visual environments – most specifically with objects, but also via integration of video, film, projections, set, and costume – has been a signature of the Company.

HEDWIG DANCES SEEKS proposals from choreographers working in the genre of contemporary/modern/experimental dance to create an approximately 15-minute interdisciplinary work for 3-6 dancers. We seek work which merges dance with a visual environment, specifically with ‘things,’ or objects, and to explore the transformation of the object with the moving body.

Selected choreographers will work with Hedwig Dances’ company members to create the new work.  The works will be performed in Hedwig Dances fall production at Ruth Page Center for the Arts on November 3-4, 2023.  Rehearsals begin the week of August 21, 2023 and run through November 3, 2023.  Each choreographer will be given 40 rehearsal hours with the Company and must be available within Hedwig Dances’ rehearsal schedule:  Monday 9-3, Wednesday, 9-3 and Thursday 12:30-4 as well as for dress, tech and performances. Each choreographer will receive a budget of $600, which includes your stipend, a video record, and a full production of your work on stage.

PROPOSALS must include

  • a clear outline of the proposed work demonstrating the intersection of movement with visual component(s). Visual components can range from set, props, projections.
  • a CV listing professional and choreographic experience,
  • a 10-minute dance reel showing excerpts of relevant choreographic work.  Please use excerpts showing a minimum of 3 – 6 dancers – no solos

Proposal must be submitted to Artist@HedwigDances.com

Proposals are due by June 26, 2023.  Applicants will be notified by July 15, 2023.  Late applications will not be accepted.
