In 2013, Clinard Dance received a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation International Connections Fund. This newly-funded project involves working with artist Hrishikesh Pawar of Pune, India, founding and artistic director of the Hrishikesh Dance Company at the Centre of Contemporary Dance. Hrishikesh Pawar will be setting a choreography on the Clinard Dance company in this fall, and in winter 2015, Wendy Clinard will travel to Pune to reciprocate.

Mr. Pawar arrived in Chicago on October 10, and will be in residence here through November 8, 2014. Pawar’s primary idiom/training is in the classical Indian traditions, but he informs the centuries-old traditions by creating new work grounded in a “content-first” approach, and exploring contemporary issues and global concerns. The work of both Hrishikesh Dance Company and Clinard Dance emanates out of world traditions, but both utilize the expressions and movement from those traditional forms to explore contemporary subject matter and issues. Both companies have a lot to share in terms of engaging company members and musicians on equal collaborative footing, and how they encourage spontaneity into their works through the use of live
music in performance.
