The Equus Projects is delighted to announce its fourth Pullman performance event, Straight from the Heart: A Choral Convening, a collaboration with Greenstone Church to take place in the Greenstone Sanctuary on Saturday, December 7 at 4:30 PM.
Conceived in collaboration with Greenstone Pastor Luther Mason, Straight from the Heart: A Choral Convening will merge rich sonic landscapes created by Pullman composer and musician Q Kiser of Cosmically Adjacent and percussionist Doran Blakeslee, vocal performances by Pullman Community Choir directed by Joyce Karnes Beer, the Greenstone Men’s Chorus, The Caritas Chorale of Pullman, directed by Patrick Brannon and soprano Cicely Perry, spoken text by Luther Mason and Sarah Rose Graber and choreography performed by six Chicago dancers.
The concept for this project began last spring. Sarah Rose Graber and JoAnna Mendl Shaw heard Q Kaiser playing in the sanctuary of the Greenstone Church in April, Luther Mason’s sonorous recitations seeming to emerge from inside Q’s sound. They began to envision a performance in which Q’s sonic landscapes might knit together an evening of choral events emerging from different locations in the church with spoken text interspersed. Shaw began to imagine choreography filling the aisles and pews of the sanctuary.
Brainstorming with Luther Mason, the notion of a Choral Convening emerged, an informal gathering that merged cultural traditions, choral interludes, spoken text and choreography laced together with rich sonic elements. Pat Brannon agreed to join the team and the project blossomed.
Envisioned as a celebration embracing multiple sonic and vocal elements, A Choral Convening is designed to showcase performers from North and South Pullman and beyond. The evening will conclude with libations and a gift shop featuring the jewelry of Deborah Jackson, a perfect prelude to the Candlelight Walk and an opportunity for some pre-holiday shopping!
