The Conviction of Pearl Dakota

Event Type
Performance
Event Description

Inspired by Soto’s observations of the traffic courts located at the Chicago Daley Center over the course of six months in 2012-13 and drawing from observed patterns of repetition and body language, as well as the internal geographies of the dancers, the performance unfolds as episodic movement potentially providing freedom, revealing conflict and complicating origins and destinations of bodies.

J. Soto is an artist generating work in performance and text. He is also co-founder of the ongoing project ESCAPE GROUP, whose mission includes project specific collaborations including performance making, writing, and curatorial programming. He is a 2013 recipient of an In the Works Residency with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events as well as a spring 2014 visiting artist within the Performance Department at Antioch College. Soto received his BA from San Francisco State University in Art and an MFA in Performance from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
