While October kicked off the dance season with a jam-packed month of shows, November barely slows down with four performances on the first day of the month alone. A dance festival continues, experimental dance gets showcased and we even get our first taste of holiday ballet fare.
The Dance COLEctive's Margi Cole lets her dancers in the driver's seat to choreograph on each other for the annual COLEctive Notions program at the Drucker Center. Dance Chicago continues a month-long fest of dance at the Athenaeum Theatre with multiple performances including Streets Urban Movement and Tales of an Idiot, while the Chicago Humanities Festival tackles dance with Dancing the Divine and a Live Dancing Archive.
The Nexus Project remixes new works from 12 area choreographers for this two-man, pay-what-you-can show. Rhythm takes center stage with Chicago Human Rhythm Projects' Global Rhythms featuring the North American debut of Che Malambo, Tap Battles and Jump Rhythm Jazz Projects' JUMP INSIDE!. Elements Contemporary Ballet gives a free, informal showing of their work-in-progress The Sun King.
Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events present choreographer Nejla Yasemin's new work Oasis in four free performances in the Spin Off series at the Cultural Center. Hot off a successful trip to Africa, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater presents Generations, the first in a five-year multigenerational experiment. The Chicago Dancemakers Forum celebrates 10 years of supporting new dance development with a daylong celebration at the Museum of Contemporary Art, featuring over 30 choreographers who have worked with CDF's Lab Artist grant program.
Khecari continues to explore audience perspective in a changing environment with the kalieidoscopic Cresset: Vibrant, Rusting. Nomi Dance showcases female choreographers in a one-night-only performance, and Natya Dance Theatre premieres a new work The Seventh Love.
Link's Hall offers up an eclectic mix of shows with a multi-disciplinary look at women and water from Mohona, Collision Theory, an improvised pairing of dancers and musicians and a small-scale theatrical telling of a super hero in Superman 2050 and Murder on the Midwest Express. Paige Cunningham Caldarella mixes Vogueing and contemporary ballet in her Chicago Dancemakers Forum project and Innervation Dance Cooperative brings new choreography in With Both Feet.
The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble comes for a one-night-only performance at the Auditorium Theatre, local favorite River North Dance Chicago takes the Harris stage with a mixed program including a world premiere by Kevin Iega Jeff. Joel Hall Dancers presents ‘Nuts and Bolts – A Jazzy Holiday Treat at the Ruth Page Center and Salt Creek Ballet closes out the month with The Nutcracker in Hinsdale.
