Overview

Based in Chicago, IL, USA, Theater Un-speak-able is dedicated to telling stories using the entire body, mind, heart and soul. Working indoors and outdoors, TU create live theatrical performances combining elements of movement, dance, mime, circus and clown.

In an effort to stay open-minded about performance, Theater Un-speak-able also wants to work with choreographers, dancers, musicians, visual artists, writers, filmmakers, architects and any other type of artist open to collaboration.

THEATER UN-SPEAK-ABLE presents an ongoing series of workshops:
The Actor as Creator
Corporeal Mime and Devised Theater
Led by Marc Frost and Omar Robles

Trained in Europe’s top physical theater schools, Marc Frost and Omar Robles have now joined forces in Chicago to share their unique methods. One of the last students of the great Marcel Marceau, Omar teaches foundational movement for the performer. Having studied the teachings of Jacques Lecoq in London, Marc teaches students how to turn dramatic movements into dynamic original stories.

Students can expect to learn how to:
- Employ the body as one’s primary dramatic tool
- Generate characters from a physical approach
- Create original work through a structured process
- Develop a vocabulary to identify dynamic material

Each class will be divided into two sessions:
- Mime and Physical Acting (led by Omar)
- Devising Original Performance (led by Marc)

Dress Code: Students should wear single-color movement clothes.
Materials: Students will need to bring a 3-foot rope for the Mime section.

THE BODY: BEFORE THE WORD
Prerequisites: None

Corporeal Mime: Discovering the body as a tool for expression.
Devising: Discovering the space in which bodies can create.

THE JOURNEY: TAKING THE FIRST STEP
Prerequisites: THE BODY and Instructor Consent

Corporeal Mime: The dynamics of the body moving in space.
Devising: The tools for creating a dynamic story.

COST: $300

THE STORY: BECOMING IT
Prerequisites: THE BODY, THE JOURNEY and Instructor Consent

Corporeal Mime: Exploring pieces from Marceau’s and Decroux’s repertory.
Devising: Structuring original student pieces building towards presentation.

COST: $300

TEACHER BIOS

Marc Frost (http://www.un-speak-able.com)

Marc Frost is an actor, deviser and educator. A native of Chicago, he has performed and produced work in Brazil, Ireland, Spain, the U.S.A. and the U.K. Most recently, he performed in Superman 2050 (Theater Un-Speak-Able) at the Times Square International Theater Festival. This production, which he directed and co-devised, was selected by the Chicago Tribune as one of the six Best Fringe Theater shows of 2011.

He has taught workshops in Lecoq, Viewpoints and Clown in Brazil, the U.S.A. and the U.K. He currently works with the Lecoq-trained teacher Paola Coletto in Chicago. In London, he created a bi-monthly evening dedicated to physical theater, which is in still operation. As a student at Tufts University, he co-founded the Bare Bodkin Theater Company, which continues to produce student-produced theater in found spaces.

Marc graduated with his M.F.A. in Lecoq Based Actor Created Theater from Naropa University in cooperation with the London International School of Performing Arts (www.lispa.co.uk).

Omar Robles (http://www.ozrobles.info)

Omar Robles is a Mime, Physical Actor and Director. He is a graduate of L'École Internationale de Mimodrame de Paris Marcel Marceau, where he learned the trade under the mentorship of Marcel Marceau along with other master teachers. Omar has performed in theaters across France, Spain, Israel, Poland, Russia, Puerto Rico and the United States.

Having relocated to Chicago in 2011, he has collaborated with the chamber music group Fifth House Ensemble in two of their season series concerts The Weaver’s Tales. Soon after, he was cast in Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble’s production of Mirrors. Early in 2012, Omar was selected by the Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble Board Members to serve as Guest Artistic Director. He will be writing and directing their Fall 2012 season production.

His work is notable for the lyricism and emphasis of his highly expressive movements and gestures, which capture the emotional intensity of his characters. Today, he is known as one of the most outstanding exponents of contemporary mime emerging from Puerto Rico. Omar is also a professional photographer and owner of Paumé Studio Photography (www.paumestudio.com).
