Event Description

Soft Parade, a new dance work by Ginger Krebs, will premier Friday, April 4th and Saturday April 5th, 2014 at 8:00pm at The Auditorium Theater’s Katten/Landau Studio.

Soft Parade investigates social status and the overt and covert violence that underpins it.  How do human beings internalize and perpetuate competitive attitudes and why do we seem to need fantasies of glory and specialness so badly?  Using rigorous physicality inspired by sports, the military and butoh, alongside moments of humor, the performers delve into vignettes exploring animal aggression, rituals of self-management, secret societies, corporate mission statements, game shows, affirmations, twerking, and the Olympics.  Soft Parade celebrates the courage to be openhearted and risk connection with others in the face of ruthless individualism and the persistent provocation of our fears.

The performance features movement performed by Ginger Krebs, Dani Martinez, April Noga, Adam Paul, Jon Poindexter, Kevin Stanton, and Aurora Tabar, with original live music by James Falzone, Charlie Malave and John Niekrasz.  Director Ginger Krebs’s previous performances have been listed among "The season's best dance events" by Time Out Chicago, “Critics theater picks” by WBEZ and have been recommended by NewCity.  Krebs is on the faculty at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she teaches courses in performance and interdisciplinary studio art.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students with valid ID.

This project is supported in part by a Small Theater and Dance grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and by New Stages for Dance II, administered by Dance/USA in partnership with Audience Architects.  Leadership Support for the New Stages for Dance II Initiative is provided by MetLife Foundation.
